What is Kintsugi?

KIHNT · sue · ghi | noun

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the pieces together with lacquer dusted in gold, silver, or platinum.

This Eastern philosophy highlights that its breakage is part of history and it still holds value and purpose. In fact, the damage can be seen as more beautiful. It is a metaphor to embrace imperfections.

We find this moving concept a beautiful part of our mission as we build our efforts surrounded by meaning.

Humble Beginnings

It began with the longing to connect with other AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) individuals in RVA but without the casual opportunity to do so. As adults, you realize that meeting new people and making friends can be difficult or awkward. Maybe your own identity is something you're still exploring or have worked to embrace.

Kintsugi Connections (KCo) is a community-orientated initiative centered on holding a fun and informal space for people to meet one another, encouraging self-discovery, and promoting connection through thoughtfully organized gatherings.

Our Mission

To foster friendships, insightful conversations, and reflective space to learn, have fun, and cultivate joy.

COMMUNITY • COLLABORATION • COMPANIONSHIP

“My parents were tasked with the job of survival and I with self-actualization. The immigrant generational gap is real. What a luxury it is to search for purpose, meaning, and fulfillment.”

The ways we gather

The ways we gather

This isn't your traumatizing family reunion - our programming is by the people for the people crafted with creativity and engagement. Through small group mixers and meeting every other month in different settings - we seek to foster a space for fellow Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders to meet on communal grounds and values. We center around a theme and question to inspire introspection and dialogue among the group.

AAPI Social Mixers + Local Meetups

Whether you enjoy food, nature, or activities - these casual events are to meet new and familiar faces. Together, we share an experience in a safe inclusive space. You don't have to explain what microaggressions are here.

We dive into topics taboo, relevant, and relatable. Discussions around personal pursuits, culture, and wellness are all part of the journey of embracing our identity as Asian-Americans and its ever-evolving narratives.

Building Community

"It takes a village" is often a quote said and heard. We are each on this journey of life doing the best we can. But, life is interconnected. In shaping ourselves and our gatherings, there are principles upheld to ensure we are aligned with the mission that keeps our space safe and sacred.

Hi~ Jacqueline here (center in purple) - your resident extrovert, dreamer, and host! 😄 I am curious of how identity and environment shapes lives. When I realized I only had 2 Asian friends - who weren't even in Richmond - I knew I had to build a place of belonging for those like me seeking connection. I'm grateful to every person involved with KCo - so much heart goes into these moments of gathering and I can only hope each of you leave with a little more light and love. 💜

Hiiii~ Jacqueline here (center in purple) - your resident extrovert, overthinking dreamer, and host! 😄 Truly, I am moved by how identity and environment shapes lives. When I realized I only had 2 Asian friends - who aren't even in RVA - I knew I had to build a place of belonging. I'm grateful to every person who has attended, supported, and volunteered - so much heart goes into these moments of gathering and I only hope each of you leave with a little more light and love. 💜
